意味と同義語を学ぶ

1. Upper Midwest

Upperは「アメリカ北部」、Midwestは「アメリカ中西部」を意味する。

 

2. remain = stay

「同じ状態ままでいる」

keepとは異なる。remainは単に状況として何かが続いているという「雰囲気」があり,keepは人,もしくはものの努力や能動的な働きかけ,意志がある、という違い。

 

2. treacherous = dangerous, unstable

「(様子がわからず)危険な」

予測がつかないことによる危険性。人に対してだと「裏切り者」という意味もあるらしい。

 

2. throughout = everhwhere in

「全域で」

 

3. mandatory = oligated

「(法律や道徳上)義務付けられた」

 

4. permitted = allowed

「許可された」

 

4. off-road

「(舗装されていない)道路の」

ここでは形容詞として使われているためoffとroadの間に「-(ハイフン)」が入っている。

 

5. the latest

「最新の」

the latestは「(今まである情報の中での)最新の」というニュアンス。

それに対してthe newestは「(今現れたばかりの)真新しい」という意味でthe latest とはちょっと違う。

「最新の記事」だったら今までの記事の中で一番新しいということなのでthe latestを使うほうが一般的でthe newestは使われない。

 

5. due to = because of

「〜が原因で」

この後には名詞がくる。

 

5. removal

「除去、撤去」

fallen tree removalで「倒れた木の撤去」となる。

fallenは聴くと「falling」と聞こえるかもしれないが「falling」だと「倒れてきている」という状態を表すのでここでは文意にそぐわない。

 

6. expect

「(当然のこと、必ずそうであろうとして)期待する」

hopeは「当然、必ず」というニュアンスはないので、expectよりゆるい「期待」。

She is expecting. は「彼女はおめでた(妊娠した)」という表現。

She is expecting a babyの「a baby」が省略された表現だそうです。

 

6. clear

「(障害物など)を除去する」

clearは除去した後そこがきれいになっている状況をイメージさせる。

removeは単に「どかす」であって、その後がきれいかどうかは別。

 

6. within the hour = in one hour

「1時間以内で」

the hourは「秒」「分」「時間」という単位を意識した表現で、「時間という単位(1つ)」を意味するので「1時間」を表す。

one hourは具体的に1時間と数量に意識がいっている表現。

どちらも同じことを表しているが、数字か単位かどちらに意識がいっているか、という違い。

 

withinは in と同じ意味だが「概念的なもの」に使う表現で、inが使える物理的な空間には使えない。in the boxはOK、within the boxとは言わない。

 

7. in the meantime

「その一方で」

物事が並行して動いている状態を表す。本文では「1時間以内にI-87の渋滞が解消される」ことと「Route42を使う」ことが並行している様子が伺える。

 

7. congestion = traffic jam

「(道路の)渋滞」
