外出自粛の中、久しぶりにThe Japan Times Alpha（以降Alpha）を読みました。
その中で裁判に関する記事があり、私が知らない表現や単語などが満載だったので、ちょいとお勉強(^^)
記事は千葉県野田市で父親が10歳の娘を虐待死した事件に関わる裁判の話です。
The man at the ceter of a high profile child abuse case was sentenced to 16 years in prison March 19 for causing the death of his 10-year-old daughter.
Yuichiro Kurihara, 42, deprived his daughter Mia of sleep and nutrition at their family home in Noda, Chiba Prefecture, leading to her death in January last year, according to the ruling.
Prosecutors had demanded a prison term of 18 years for Kurihara.
The father , dressed in a black suit and blue necktie, expressed no emotion as he bowed to the presiding judge and the prosecutors after the ruling was handed down.
During hearings at the Chiba District Court, Kurihara admitted to assaulting Mia but denied other charges leveled against him.
However, the court found him guilty on all charges of fatal child abuse during the ruling on March 19, calling the father's testimony "unreliable".
The father was indicted in March last year after the girl was found dead in the bathroom of their home on Jan. 24.

high profileで「注目を浴びる」でその中心なので「渦中の」ということに
■ child abuse case
abuseは「虐待」。事件のことをcaseという単語で表現しています。
■ was sentenced
sentenceは「言い渡す」。判決を言い渡される時にこういう単語使うんですね。
■ 〜 years in prison
「懲役〜年」
■ deprive
「制限する」
■ nutrition
「食事をする」。ロングマン英英辞典によると「the process of giving or getting the right type of food for good health ad growth」とあります。ただ「食べる」ではなく「健康のために食をとる」という意味があるんですね。
■ leading to 〜
「〜に至らしめる」。なかなかこういう表現が浮かんでこない(^^;;
■ the ruling
「判決」
■ prosecutor
「検察」。人を表す語尾が「or」なので「グレードの高い人」という位置づけなのかな。
■ demand
裁判では「求刑する」で使われるんですね
■ a prison term of 〜 years for ・・・
「・・・に対して懲役〜年」。こういうふうに使うんですね〜

「判決が下った」。hand downなんだ・・・
■ admit
「認める」。ロングマン英英辞典によると「to accept and agree unwillingly that something is true or that someone else is right」とあります。unwillingly（望んでいないのに）という副詞が入っているところがミソですね。

「暴行を加える」
■ deny
「否定する」
■ charges leveled against him
「彼に対して問われた罪」。level a charge against ~で「〜に罪を問う」という表現です。まさに裁判用語(^^)

「裁判所は彼を有罪とした」。foundを使うんだ・・・

「子供の虐待死」。fatalが「死」を意味します

とduringが何度も使われていますが、「公判の中で」ということを表現するのに、duringを使うんですね。inとかonではないんだ〜、と新鮮でした。
ということで、裁判で使われる表現がたくさんでてきたので、私にはいい勉強になりました(^^)
