Sound Change

Have a で音変化。

have anで音変化。

some of it(よく使われる表現)その一部。

None of usで音変化

life in a city betterの後にthan one in a country (田舎暮し)が省略されている。

A: I hate to go out in the rain.

B: Hey, I have an idea. I’ll go with you.

A: Really? Thanks!

B: No problem.

  1. The game was called [ ] rain.
  2. Should I [ ]?
  3. [ ] on time?
  4. I’ll [ ] at the station.
  5. He always takes advantage [ ].

解答

  1. The game was called on account of rain.

  3. Did he arrive on time?
  4. I’ll pick him up at the station.
  5. He always takes advantage of his position.

解説

1. on account of〜 で「〜のせいで」。

2. fill it inで(空欄)を埋める。

Well, some things are just meant to be.

Christmas is on December 25th :

New Year's Day, January 1st ;

and Halloween is on October 31st.

After all, it is All Hallows' Eve.

It's been celebrated for more than a thousand years.

But the Halloween & Costume Association has launched

a petition drive to change Halloween

to the last Saturday of October.

The group says it would be safer and not interfere

with work or school activities.

be meant to be ~ :〜になる運命だった

the last Saturday of October:10月最後の土曜日。

But [ ] and [ ] are amongst the worst [ ].

In 1992, Australian prime minister Paul Keating put his [ ] around the woman who is his [ ] of state.

In 2007, Hollywood [ ] Mickey Rooney kissed her [ ].

And then there are the US [ ].

回答

But politicians and celebrities are amongst the worst offenders.

In 1992, Australian prime minister Paul Keating put his arm around the woman who is his head of state.

In 2007, Hollywood royalty Mickey Rooney kissed her hand.

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands also went for a kiss,

whilst the queen of fashion, Vogue's Anna Wintour, caused a stir when she didn't remove her glasses.

And then there are the US president.

went for a kiss :

3回目なのに今回も聞き取れなかった(^^;;
