〜つづりにあるのに発音しない文字〜

But I can’t tell

単語の最後の文字(または発音)に同じ文字(あるいは発音)で始まる単語が続く時、1語目の最後の文字(または発音)が聞こえなくなることがあります。

 

ここではcan’tのtですね。

 

can’t tell は「キャント・テル」ではなく、「キャンテ-ゥ」のように聞こえます。

完全に発音しないのではなく、発音しようとして音はださずに一瞬のタメを作るようなイメージ。

 

以下例文の赤字のところが対応します。

頻度を表す言葉の頻度順

always > often > at times, sometimes > seldom > rarely > never

 

余談で出た表現

We are all alone 「我々は2人きり」

aloneは「周りに誰もいない状況」を表すので、上述のような訳になる。

なお、lonelyは「一人ぼっちで寂しい感情」を表すのでaloneとは意味が異なるようです。
